Of the 407 Houston comedy listings currently on sale with an advertised price, the two most expensive stand-up tickets are Spanish-language shows at the Houston Improv: 68 dollars for Richie O’Farrill on October 7, and 62 for Iván Fematt La Mole on October 15. Both are weeknight bookings, and they are the two highest-priced listings on the Improv’s entire calendar, sitting above the Andrew Schulz weekend in September. That is not a novelty slot. It is a headliner market, and it is one of two comedy scenes in this city that most listings coverage treats as a footnote.
Spanish-language comedy books like a touring circuit
Ten Spanish-language listings are on the calendar between now and the end of November, spread across four rooms, and the range of those rooms is the interesting part. Punch Line Houston downtown carries the most dates: Abelardo on September 13, Poly Diaz on September 29, Manuel Ángel Redondo on October 6, and Ramiro Gonzalez on November 6. The Improv takes the higher-priced bookings, including Standoperos: La Tómbola on October 21 at about 50 dollars.
Then it scales up past the clubs entirely. Franco Escamilla brings El Juicio to the Arena Theatre on November 7, and Gaby Mendoza and Jose Luis Zagar play the same room on November 14. A theatre booking is a different tier from a 250-seat club, and it is worth knowing that the Spanish-language side of Houston comedy reaches it. On the other end, The Riot has Bryan Torresdey and Joshua Jay Nieto co-headlining on September 20 for 20 dollars, which is the cheapest way into this material on the current calendar. Thirty-two Black comedy listings, across seven rooms
The Black comedy calendar is the larger of the two by volume: 32 listings currently on sale, and unlike the Spanish-language dates they are not concentrated in one or two venues. Seven rooms carry them, from the Improv and Punch Line down through The Riot, the Secret Group, the Riot’s Conroe room, the Pink Flamingo, and the Nathaniel Center.
The near-term dates run through Punch Line, where Na’im Lynn plays Thursday through Saturday this week at 34 dollars. After that the fall fills in steadily: Arnez J at the Improv September 10 through 13, Hassan Phills headlining The Riot on September 17 for 20, Chinedu at Punch Line on September 27, Just Nesh at the Improv October 1, Tommy Davidson at the Nathaniel Center on October 3, and Ashton Womack at The Riot on October 11 for 20. Marlon Wayans takes the Improv October 16 through 18, TK Kirkland is at Punch Line the same weekend, D’Lai plays Punch Line October 29 and 30, Alonzo Bodden runs November 5 through 7, and Corey Holcomb closes out at the Improv November 13 and 14.
The price spread across those is wide, from 14 dollars and change at the Secret Group up to 34 at Punch Line, which means the constraint on seeing this material is rarely money. It is knowing the date exists, which is what our Black comedy listings page is for.
The free Tuesday underneath all of it
Every touring calendar sits on top of a local one, and here that is FOR THE CULTURE, a weekly Tuesday show at 8pm at The Secret Group in EaDo. It is free, it recurs on the calendar through the fall, and it is the room where Houston comics work this material out in front of an audience that showed up for it specifically.
If you only ever buy the headliner tickets, you see the finished product and miss where it comes from. A free Tuesday and a 34 dollar Saturday are not substitutes for each other, and the Tuesday is the one that tells you what the city’s own comics are doing.
One night in Kreyòl
There is exactly one Haitian Kreyòl comedy listing on the Houston calendar: Sejoe, at Punch Line, Sunday September 6, at 41 dollars. One date, one room, no recurrence. It is the kind of booking that does not come back if the room is soft, so it is worth flagging plainly rather than burying it in a longer list.
Book the weeknight dates before the weekend runs sell out
The pattern across both calendars is that the weekend runs, the Wayans and Bodden and Escamilla dates, sell on the name and sell early, while the weeknight bookings that are often better value stay available until close to the day.
