The Riot Comedy Club is Houston’s busiest comedy room, and as of August 2026 it has a permanent home built for the job: a 4,700 square foot venue at 1925 Washington Ave in the Old Sixth Ward, with a custom 150-seat showroom, a daytime coffee shop and cafe, a full evening bar, and full ADA accessibility. It sits next door to Julep, the James Beard Award winning cocktail bar, which makes the block an easy night out before you even buy a ticket.
The club spent years upstairs at Rudyard’s in Montrose and outgrew it. Founder Brian Gendron put the reason for moving plainly: as the club grew, it needed a space that fully delivered the experience it wanted to give guests, comedians and staff. The new room is the result, and it is purpose-built rather than borrowed, which is still rare in Houston comedy.
Seven nights a week, and what that actually means
The Riot runs shows every night of the week, usually at 7pm and 9pm, which is more comedy than any other room in the city puts on. Tickets are mostly in the eight to twenty-five dollar range and a meaningful number of the weeknight shows are free. That combination is the whole proposition: you do not have to plan around a headliner’s weekend run, because there is a show tonight, and it costs about what a cocktail costs.
The booking leans on tightly curated showcases rather than one comic for ninety minutes. A typical bill is several working comics in a row, often with a touring name carrying credits from Kill Tony, Don’t Tell Comedy, or late-night TV. Because the room seats 150, a strong weekend show genuinely does sell out.
The Riot vs. the Improv and Punch Line: which one tonight?
The Houston Improv and Punch Line are the rooms for a name you already know, with the ticket price and the drink minimum that go with it. The Riot is the neighborhood-club answer: cheaper, smaller, no minimum, and open on the nights the big clubs are dark. If you want a specific comic, check the big two. If you want to go see stand-up tonight without a plan, The Riot is usually the answer.
Against the other small rooms, the difference is consistency. The Secret Group is the cheaper, scrappier, more experimental end of the same idea, and The Den is the intimate speakeasy option. The Riot sits between them: a real club with a real showroom, running at a volume nothing else in the city matches.
