Zero. Across every Houston comedy listing currently on sale, running from now through the end of November, not one Friday show costs nothing. Tuesday carries thirty-two free listings over that same stretch. The city’s comedy calendar is priced like airline seats, and almost nobody books it that way, because the nights people are free are the nights the rooms charge for.
Here is the whole weekday spread, computed from the 497 listings on sale across 23 venues. Every number below is cumulative across the forward calendar, not a count for any single night.
The gap between Tuesday and Saturday is two and a half times
Median paid ticket, by day of the week: Monday 8 dollars, Tuesday 8, Wednesday 10, Thursday 10, Sunday 10, Friday 19, Saturday 20. That is the entire finding. A Saturday ticket costs two and a half times a Tuesday ticket for stand-up in the same city, frequently in the same building, occasionally from the same comic working out the same material.
The jump does not happen gradually across the week. Monday through Thursday sits flat between 8 and 10 dollars, and then Friday roughly doubles it. Sunday drops straight back to 10. If you have flexibility about which night you go out, the cheapest version of the decision is any night that is not Friday or Saturday, and the difference is large enough to cover parking and a drink.
Where the free shows actually are
Seventy-one listings on the calendar cost nothing, and they cluster hard. Tuesday holds 32 of them, Monday 17, Thursday 15. Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday hold seven between them. Friday holds none.
Four recurring series do most of that work. The Riot runs a free 9pm standup showcase on Mondays and again on Tuesdays, thirteen dates each on the current calendar. Notsuoh downtown runs Social Comedy Nite free at 10pm on Tuesdays, also thirteen dates. Social Beer Garden HTX runs its own Social Comedy Nite free at 9pm on Thursdays, thirteen dates. Those four series alone account for 52 of the 71 free listings, which means the free comedy in this city is less a scattering of one-offs than four reliable weeknight habits. The five to ten dollar tier is where the value sits
Free is not always the right target, because the free listings skew late and skew toward rooms where the lineup is unannounced. The paid tier just above it is the better deal for most people.
The $2 Bill show at The Secret Group runs Wednesdays at 8pm and prices out around five dollars and change after fees, the lowest paid ticket in the dataset. Wonky Power runs an East End showcase Thursdays at 7pm for about seven. The Riot sells its 7pm Tuesday and Wednesday showcases at eight dollars flat, in a purpose-built room with an announced lineup, which is a different product from a bar back room at the same price. What a Tuesday actually costs you
The savings are real and so is the trade, and it is worth being straight about it. Fridays carry 112 listings on the forward calendar and Saturdays 113. Tuesday carries 52 and Monday 34. You are choosing from roughly half the menu, and the touring headliners are not on it, because national acts play weekend runs almost without exception. Nobody is selling you Russell Peters on a Monday.
What you get instead is the working scene: local comics with announced sets, showcase formats with six or seven names on the bill, and rooms at maybe a third capacity where the comedy is closer and the crowd is there deliberately. One more piece of arithmetic that the ticket price hides. The two big touring rooms attach a per-person minimum on top of the ticket and the weeknight rooms largely do not, which makes the weekday gap wider than the ticket prices by themselves suggest. Book the Tuesday, save the Saturday for a name
The practical version of all of this fits in two rules. If you want to go out and do not care who is performing, go Monday through Thursday and expect to pay between nothing and ten dollars. If there is a specific comic you want to see, accept that it is a Friday or Saturday and that the ticket is around twenty before the minimum.
This week that means the free Riot showcase at 9pm Tuesday, the two dollar show at the Secret Group Wednesday at 8, and Social Comedy Nite at Social Beer Garden free Thursday at 9.
