“Abby Govindan’s tour de force personality shines through despite an underpowered Fringe debut.” That was Fest’s verdict on Pushing 30, the multimedia hour Govindan brought to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.
Govindan, a Houston native who made her comedy debut at Caroline’s on Broadway in December 2017, returns to her hometown Monday, October 26, at 8 p.m. at The Secret Group. Tickets are $26.13. Her material takes on dating, aging, generational expectations, and Indian American family life.
Her solo work uses visual material, including a PowerPoint deck. In one bit, she recounts impersonating a white woman to get a free copy of a Ku Klux Klan manifesto for a college class. In another: “My name does mean overdramatic shepherd. So essentially, I am Jesus.”
Pushing 30 follows her 2025 Off-Broadway solo show How to Embarrass Your Immigrant Parents. She has also appeared on Scam Goddess and Drunk Women Solving Crime.
