Phil Hanley grew up in Oshawa, Ontario, struggled with reading from first grade, and was eventually diagnosed with dyslexia. Before stand-up, he worked as a runway model in Europe, then started doing open mics in Vancouver music venues. His 2025 memoir, Spellbound: My Life as a Dyslexic Wordsmith, includes the line, “I always prayed I’d wake up smart.”
His 2022 YouTube special, Ooh La La, calls him “a acid eating, dyslexic, former model who falls in love too easily.” He also has a 2015 Comedy Central special, The Half Hour: Phil Hanley, and credits including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and two episodes of Inside Amy Schumer.
A Comedy Cellar regular in New York, Hanley works in traditional jokes, audience interaction, and improvisation. The material is reflective, sharply observed, and rarely interested in making the point gently.
