Cattywampus: A Southern Woman’s Guide to Laughing When Life Goes Sideways is Ellen Skrmetti’s second essay collection from Apiary, following 2024’s Hey, Jesus, It’s Me: I Have Questions, Comments, and Concerns.
Skrmetti started performing stand-up in 2020 after taking comedy-writing classes at 41. When live comedy paused during the pandemic, she took online classes with Second City and made character sketches, including “If the Queen Died in the South,” before building out “Hey Jesus, It’s Me.”
Her clean, faith-inflected Southern comedy covers marriage, motherhood, menopause, college football, and Southern culture. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. What if I don’t want to?” Her work pairs personal-storytelling stand-up with short, character-driven social-media sketches.
She appeared on That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs in 2024 and In Good Faith in September 2025. WSFA 12 News interviewed her in October 2024 about Hey Jesus, It’s Me.
